The Elements of Healing Anxiety: A Holistic Approach

Oftentimes healing is thought in relation to the human mind and neglects the other vital parts of growth. This speaks to the social and cultural beliefs about the mind being a separate entity from the body. Contrary to this belief, the human mind and body are intertwined in every way; consideration of both as a unit is integral to the healing journey.

Embarking on this type of transformational journey will lead individuals to a place of wholeness. Wholeness occurs when one embraces and connects with all sides of themselves: physically, emotionally, socially, spiritually, environmentally, intellectually, and financially. A holistic approach of healing emphasizes all elements of a person and their life in order to comprehensively navigate change.

Here are the seven components of healing and their considerations:

Physical.

Caring for the body is pivotal to coming back to wholeness. Focuses in this area may include regulating the autonomic nervous system, improving diet and hydration, and integrating movement into daily life.

Emotional.

Learning to identify, feel, notice, and process human emotion provides individuals with wisdom and understanding. Holding a safe space, for the self and others, to express and feel their emotions is a natural process of being human.

Social.

Finding social support through relationships, groups, and communities while navigating self-growth meets the biological need for connection. Without said support, the healing journey can feel isolating and burdensome.

Spiritual.

Spirituality can be understood as a connection with the self, others, nature, and/or a higher power. Defining spirituality and valued practices that align with the individual are key to growth. Practices might include mindfulness, meditation, yoga, journaling, rituals, and religiously based experiences.

Environmental.

Acknowledging challenges in the environment and identifying barriers to growth creates a clearer path towards wholeness. Environmental factors to consider are home and work environments, geographical environment, and systemic environments.

Intellectual.

Expanding one’s knowledge base, undergoing training or advancement in careers, and increasing consciousness are all ways to support intellectual growth.

Financial.

One’s financial condition greatly impacts their ability to meet basic needs, access resources, and sustain a balanced well-being. Researching non-profit organizations, local groups and communities, or free resources through state supported programs can provide a sense of security in how one manages their financials.
